Frequently asked questions about card holds

Short answers to the questions that bring people to this site — with links to the full guides when the short answer is not enough.

Why do I see both a hotel hold and a charge?

The final charge can post before the earlier hold disappears, so the two entries briefly overlap. One is the reservation; the other is the real bill. If both become posted charges, or the hold remains beyond your issuer's expected window, contact the hotel and then the issuer. See hotel card holds.

Can I dispute a pending pre-authorization?

Issuer procedures differ. Many issuers treat pending authorizations differently from posted transactions, and there may be nothing to dispute until an amount actually posts. Do call the issuer if the merchant is unknown, the amount creates hardship, or you suspect fraud.

Does a hold affect my credit score?

A hold reduces your available credit while it is pending. Credit reporting and utilization calculations depend on what the issuer reports and when — a hold is not itself a reported debt, but if a statement closes while a large hold shrinks your available credit, the reported picture can look different that month. Ask your issuer how your account is handled.

Can a debit hold cause payment problems?

Yes. Because the hold reduces available cash, another payment may be declined or trigger consequences under your bank's account terms. Keep a buffer, ask the merchant for the hold amount in advance, and avoid large travel holds on the account your bills come out of. See debit card holds.

How long will my hold last?

There is no universal period. It depends on the merchant category, how quickly the merchant completes the transaction or sends a reversal, card-network rules, and your issuer's processing. The situation-by-situation breakdown is in hold release times.

Why was the gas-station hold so much more than my fuel?

The pump authorizes a preset estimate before you fill up because the final total is unknown at that moment. After you finish, the station submits the actual amount and the difference is released. Paying inside for a fixed amount avoids the large estimate. See gas station card holds.

What if my card was replaced after the hold?

Contact the issuer. It can explain how pending authorizations and adjustments are routed when an account number changes — holds placed on the old number normally follow the account, but the issuer is the only one who can confirm your case.

Is a pre-authorized debit (PAD) the same as a card hold?

No. In Canada, a PAD is an agreement letting a biller withdraw money from your bank account; a card hold is a temporary reserve on a card. They have different cancellation steps and different deadlines — the Canada guide covers both.

What protects me in the UK if something goes wrong with a purchase?

For qualifying credit-card purchases over £100 and up to £30,000, Section 75 can make the card provider jointly liable with the supplier. For debit, credit, and prepaid purchases, chargeback may help, generally within 120 days. Neither is the same as a hold — details in the UK guide.

What if medical prior authorization is denied?

Ask for the reason in writing, the deadline, and the insurer's appeal or grievance process. Your care team may be able to supply missing clinical information or discuss alternatives. See medical prior authorization.
